About Dr. Declan Sweeney
PhD | Clinical Specialist in Biomechanics & Orthotics
Dr Declan Sweeney is a Clinical Specialist in Biomechanics and Orthotics with over 20 years’ experience in the assessment and management of complex musculoskeletal foot and lower-limb conditions. He obtained a first class Bsc(hons) degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Salford Univeristy in 2002, and also went back to Salford to complete his PhD in 2016. His research examined 'the effect of anti-pronation orthoses on lower limb biomechanics in gait' . After completing his undergraduate degree Declan worked in the Orthotic & Prosthetic services based in Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital between 2002-2006. In 2006 Declan established, developed and led the Orthotics Service within St Gabriel's Foundation, Limerick until January 2026. During this time Declan won a number of national awards most noteably winning 'Best Social Enterprise in Ireland' at the all Ireland Comminuty and Council Awards in Croke Park in 2020.
Central to Declan’s work is a patient-centred, clinically led approach. Time is taken to assess movement patterns and understand individual circumstances and long-term goals before treatment is recommended. Recognising that no two patients present the same, each orthotic solution is individually prescribed rather than standardised.
